Ring pull-up

Also called Pull-up on rings

The ring pull-up is a pull-up on gymnastic rings. The rings move freely, so your shoulders and core work to keep them steady. Expect your lats and biceps to work hardest, with your upper back, shoulders, forearms and abs joining in. The neutral grip is often easier on the wrists. It suits you once you can do clean Pull-ups on a bar. Keep the rings close and still, and pull them toward your chest. End the set when the rings start to drift.

How to do it

  1. Hang from the rings with your palms facing each other, shoulder-width apart.
  2. Draw your shoulders down and keep your body tight.
  3. Pull your elbows down until the rings reach your chest.
  4. Lower slowly until your arms are straight, keeping the rings still.

Form tips

  • Hold the rings shoulder-width, palms facing in.
  • Pull your elbows down and keep the rings still.
  • Rings to your chest, then lower under control.

Common mistake

  • Letting the rings drift outward instead of holding them steady.
